10 Tips for Battling Age-Related Depression

Age-Related Depression

Growing older can be a beautiful, happy process which you can share with everyone that you love. Despite trying to be upbeat, some people will come down with depression for a variety of reasons. Here are some ideas to pick yourself up out of the doldrums and get back to living life to its fullest!

  1. Make sure you include laughter in your daily life. Laughter has many benefits for your health and well-being. A good laugh will boost your immune system, which in turn will keep you healthy and feeling good. When you laugh, your stress levels go down, and you will feel much more relaxed and peaceful. Your mood will lighten. Has a good laugh ever made you feel sad or depressed? It is doubtful. Make sure you keep your sense of humor and can laugh at yourself and others. Watch a comedy or sitcom on television. Talk to those friends or family members who know what to say to make you smile. Do whatever you can to have a good laugh at least once a day.

  1. Spend time with your family. Family is the one thing that will always boost your mood. Those people are the ones that are forever there for you. Getting together with family members can help you forget your own troubles and make you feel good. Human interaction is essential for mental well-being.

  1. Hang out with upbeat people. People who are happy with a positive outlook on life will rub off on you. You need this type of person to ward off feeling down. A positive outlook is what you need, not someone who complains about everything and thinks the world is out to get them. Make sure you have upbeat people in your life to keep you looking ahead with a smile.

  1. Spend time with younger people. Those people who are in their prime have natural energy. Spending time with them can help you feel better about yourself as you remember what it was like to be that age. Draw on the energy and feel young again mentally if not physically.

  1. Make sure you exercise often. Any exercise will help you. When you are feeling down it can sometimes be hard to get moving, but you need to force yourself to do so. Studies have time and again found exercise boosts a person’s mood and makes him or her feel energized. You will also sleep better. The required amount of sleep alone will help you feel more energized. Get out and walk, bike or join a gym. Try swimming or yoga. Any form of exercise can help you feel better and keep the blues away.

  1. Read books with a positive and happy story line. A good book with feel-good characters will help lighten your mood. You will not be able to help but feel happy when reading about characters that are happy with their lives and have a sense of humor. Becoming engrossed in a good novel such as these is just the form of relaxation you need. Avoid those books that are sad or involve death or violent crimes unless you enjoy them and will not be affected.

  1. Keep occupied with activities that interest you. An idle mind and body will not be able to help feeling down. Everyone needs to feel like they are doing something useful. Spend time in your favorite hobbies or crafts. Get outside and go for a walk. Start a home business. Help your neighbors by volunteering. There are many things you can do to keep busy.

  1. Keep yourself self-reliant if possible. When you must rely on others to do simple tasks for you, it can make you depressed and feeling bad about yourself. Do everything in your power to keep healthy and able to take care of yourself. You will feel better for it.

  1. Reach out for help if necessary. If you do become unable to do certain things, do not be afraid to ask for help. If you sit and worry about things that are not getting done because of incapacity, you will feel down and worthless. Everyone needs help now and then, so you should not be ashamed. Most people will be glad to help you when you need it.

  1. Keep health issues in check. Make sure you keep up with suggested physicals with your doctor. Learning about problems early will keep your condition from getting worse. Make sure you follow a healthy diet also as diet has been proven time and again to have a positive effect on health.

Try the above tips to help yourself get back on your feet but do get help if you have any thoughts that go beyond typical depression. You may be in pain but imagine how horrible your family or friends would feel if they lost you!
